The drinks we choose matter. Many drinks have natural or added sugar. Children who often drink sugary drinks are more likely to have tooth decay. Choosing drinks with high levels of acid softens enamel and chemically dissolves the outer layer of teeth.

  • Sugar from sugar-sweetened beverages feeds the bacteria which causes tooth decay.
  • Soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, and juice packs expose teeth to acids and sugars that softens enamel which leads to tooth decay.
  • Drinking soft drinks nearly doubles the risk of cavities in children.

HEALTHY TEETH TIPS:


  • Drink sugar-sweetened beverages in moderation.
  • Use a straw.
  • Drink water to hydrate.
  • Drink in one sitting or with food.
  • Drink milk. Its neutral pH of 6.7 and 1 tsp of lactose (sugar) per 12 ounces are healthy for teeth.
  • Use fluoride and remineralizing products.
  • Wait 1 hour to brush after an acidic drink.
