Expanding Digital Access in Sierra County

Sierra County is proud to launch a countywide digital literacy initiative designed to bridge the digital divide and increase internet access for all residents.

With funding from the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF), the County is installing publicly accessible Starlink Wi-Fi units in key locations, providing high-speed internet to areas that have historically lacked reliable service. The first location in this initiative is the Alleghany Fire House Plaza.

In addition to cMountain Wifionnectivity, we recognize that access alone is not enough—skills and confidence are just as important. That’s why Sierra County is partnering with the Sierra County School for Adults (SCSA) to sponsor free, in-person digital literacy classes open to the public. These classes will cover essential computer and internet skills, online safety, accessing government services, and more. Whether you're a beginner or looking to improve your digital skills, these classes are designed to meet you where you are.

Looking for a self-paced option you can start right now?  No problem!  DigitalLearn is a free, online platform that offers courses to improve your digital skills.  The site was developed by the Public Library Association (PLA) with a partnership from CETF.  Topics range from web searches, using mobile devices, internet privacy, productivity, and more.

We’re also actively seeking additional funding through the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF) to expand our efforts, deploy more devices, and continue offering high-quality digital education and equipment through our library system.

Together, these efforts aim to ensure that every resident of Sierra County—regardless of age, income, or location—can participate fully in today’s digital world.
